8 <h1>Customizing entry types</h1>
10 <p>To customize entry types, select the menu <strong>Options
11 --> Customize entry types</strong>.</p>
13 <p>When customizing an entry type, you both define how its
14 entry editor should look, and what it takes for JabRef to
15 consider an entry complete. You can both make changes to the
16 existing entry types, and define new ones.</p>
18 <p>Note that no modifications you make in this dialog will be
19 stored until you click <b>Apply</b> or <b>OK</b>. If you click
20 <b>Cancel</b> or simply close the dialog, unapplied changes
23 <h2>Using the entry customization dialog</h2>
26 customization dialog is divided in three main panels. The
27 leftmost panel is where you can select an entry type for
28 modification, and add new ones. The middle panel is used for
29 setting up the required fields of the selected entry type, and
30 the right panel for setting up the optional fields.</p>
32 <h3>Adding and removing entry types</h3>
34 <p>The currently available entry types are listed in the left
35 panel. Whenever you select an entry type, the other panels will
36 update to show what fields are required and optional for this
39 <p>To add a new entry type, you must enter a name for it in the
40 text field below the type list, and click <b>Add</b>. The new
41 entry type will be added to the list, and selected for
44 <p>To remove a custom entry type, select it and click
45 <b>Remove</b>. This operation will only be available for custom
46 entry types that are not merely modifications of standard
47 types. It is not possible to remove a standard entry type.</p>
49 <p>To return a modified standard type to its default setup,
50 select it and click <b>Default</b>. This operation will only be
51 available for customized entry types that modify a standard
54 <h2>Editing entry types</h2>
56 <p>When an entry type is selected, the
57 current required and optional fields will be listed in the
58 center and right panels of the dialog. The process of editing
59 the lists are identical for the required and optional fields.</p>
61 <p>To add a new field, edit the text field below the list, or
62 select a field name from the dropdown menu, then click
63 <b>Add</b>. The chosen field name will be added at the end of
66 <p>To remove one or more fields, select them in the list, and
67 click <b>Remove</b>.</p>
69 <p>To change the order of the fields, choose one field name,
70 and click the arrow buttons to move it up or down in the
73 <p>There is one limitation to customizing entry types; certain
74 types have an and/or condition in their required fields. For
75 instance, a <em>book</em> entry is complete with either the
76 <em>author</em> or the <em>editor</em> field, or both. This
